PE
"Learning about how our bodies move in different ways and how to keep healthy"
Intent
As an Infant and Nursery School many of our children join our school with a range of pre-school experiences of physical activity. The Boldmere community is very proactive in offering a wide range of opportunities including swimming, gymnastics, sailing, football and much more. As a school we use the acronym ‘SELF’ to build on these prior experiences and to use physical activity to prepare our pupils physically, mentally and socially to succeed in later life.
We strive to inspire our children to develop their skills and competencies and teach them to apply these in a range of contexts so that all children can achieve success at their own level. We want to provide children with a broad range of experiences and opportunities to try a range of different activities.
We promote a love for physical activity and educate our pupils to understand the importance of movement and equip them with the knowledge to keep themselves safe, happy and able to make healthy lifestyle choices.
We strive to constantly develop our fundamental school values through giving pupils the confidence and motivation to engage in competitive activities and develop a sense of fair play and sportsmanship, as we believe that this enhances all aspects of life.
Implementation
At Boldmere we believe that engaging in physical activity and games is a fantastic way to embed our school values of respect, kindness, co-operation, honesty, resilience and appreciation.
Having previously explored commercial schemes and decided that none met the specific needs of our setting, we have devised our own curriculum map from the National Curriculum that offers a model of skills, knowledge and progression from Early Years through to Key Stage 1 and beyond. We utilise the expertise of specialist sports coaches to develop staff subject knowledge and support with the planning and delivery of highly effective PE lessons. This uses a large percentage of our sports premium budget and is therefore kept under regular review to ensure we are maximising the effectiveness of the funding.
As an Infant and Nursery School, we place a strong focus on developing the Fundamental Movement Skills as we believe that teaching these essential skills from an early age will form the building blocks for future success in physical activity. These skills include stability (static and dynamic balancing, rotation), locomotion (walking, running, dodging, hopping, jumping) and object control (sending, receiving and controlling an object). As a Federation the PE leads across our schools liaise to ensure smooth progression from Key Stage 1 into Key Stage 2, allowing all children to build on their previous skills and experiences.
Our PE curriculum is designed to develop the skills, confidence and enjoyment of all children, regardless of their previous experiences of sport and physical activity. In addition to regular PE lessons, we provide opportunities for internal and external competitions and Sports Days, as well as extra-curricular clubs like dance, football, tennis or rugby. We also celebrate individual talents and facilitate new experiences through special activity days such as Bhangra dancing, rock climbing, bushcraft and archery experiences. We have enhanced our school environment to include a bike track, climbing wall, woodland and a climbing frame to encourage our children to be physically active and further promote a love for physical activity, which we hope our children will carry with them throughout their lives.
